Topic 14 Element, Mixture, Compound and Substance
Chemistry is the study of physical matter, which is classified in many different ways, In this unit, students will learn fundamental knowledge about state of matter (gas, liquid or solid), chemical form (element, mixture or compound), chemical structure (atoms or molecules, etc.) and so on.
Topic 13 Atoms and Matter
In this unit, students will learn about Atom and its component, what is matter, states of matter, and changing states of matter. Students will also identify the difference between Chemical Changes Versus Physical Changes. We will have fun activities during the class to help students understand the concept. Any questions that raise during home learning will be discussed during the lesson as well.
Topic 12 Data Sorting
We are swimming in the ocean of data daily, and without a guide, we are very easily to get lost. When we have to look up something from a large volume, we wish they are well organised, so that we can located the target efficiently. Can someone tell me how to locate a book in the library?
Topic 11 Cipher – The Secret Language
Have you ever use a invisible ink pen? With it, you could send messages to a friends that no one else could read. Or perhaps you remember using special symbols to write notes to communicate in your class, or you created new language that only certain people can understand – just like the book Frindle? If the note was encrypted or coded, your teacher, could learn nothing about your secret.
Topic 10 Fun Coding
In this unit, students will learn the basics about computer – concept, types, component, functionalities, the big ideas behind it, and further more, simple coding. We have known that the computer is designed as universal machine. This unit will help children understand how the computer works as universal machine with hands on coding experiments.
Topic 9 Tire and Pattern
In this unit, students will be introduced to traction and friction. They will compare and analysis properties of different material and find out why rubber is used for tires, as well as the impact to our environment. We will also approach the topic in social science aspect, i.e. the rubber rationing regulations in WWII. Through the activities, Students will build rubber tired vehicle and calculate speed and distance with given information.
Topic 8 The Physics of an Egg Drop
In this unit, students will observe and discuss what forces were applied to the egg when it’s dropping. They will be introduced to Newton’s Law, and explains the phenomenon in terms of potential and kinetic energy, they will also learn the relationship among force, mass and acceleration and able to calculate any of the factor when the other two factors are known. At last, students will build a protective structure around the egg based on the knowledge and reasoning.
In this unit, students will understand what Bernoulli’s principle is, and how people apply the principle in engineering design. This very practical lesson on physics can be used in many real world examples, for example how a bird flies. This concept will also relates to other knowledge such as gravity, speed and motions. Based on the concept, students will use math and logic skills to explain the phenomenon around the world.
In this unit, students will become familiar with gravity and factors which affect gravity. They will brainstorm the activities and sports related to the central idea, simulate Galileo’s experiments with different falling objects/bodies and find out what are the factors that affect the free-falling speed (gravitational acceleration) and learn how to calculate central gravity with hands on experiments and data analytical skills.
Topic 1 Nuclear Energy:
In this unit, student will brainstorm, discuss and compare existing energy resources. They will research on Nuclear energy, understand the concept of nuclear fission and chain reaction, how nuclear station was constructed and the reason behind it. We will also take a close look at Fukushima meltdown in 2011 and analysis the impact of nuclear energy to our society and environment. Students are encouraged to find out alternate clean energy solutions that has less impact on our environment.
Topic 2 Simple Machines, Pyramid, Maglev train, Simple Computers
In this unit, students are encouraged to find a topic that he/she is particularly interested and research on it. During the class, students are presenting the concept, ideas behind the topic, real world examples, reasoning and logic with approach of physics, society studies and math. After their presentation, students are encouraged to ask questions in more depth to develop their logic and critical thinking skills.
Topic 3 Hydroelectricity, Atom, Stealth Plane
Same with the format above, in this unit, students are encouraged to find a topic that he/she is particularly interested and research on it. Moreover, students developed new questions and will research on their findings.
Topic 4 Waves and Sound
In this unit, students will understand the basic idea of waves, types of waves and how waves related to our senses and daily life.
Topic 5 Dark Energy
In this unit, students will research on the big bang, understand how universe was formed, and question if the universe is still expending and find out what is balancing with the gravity of the universe. Students will also discuss of the big question – why do we explore what is Dark Energy?
Topic 10 Fun Coding
In this unit, students will research on history of cryptology in different forms, era, countries and the reason behind it. They will understand how coding works, how people use code to communicate around the world and they will design their own coding to encrypt and decrypt a piece of information with math, science and logic skills.
Topic 11 Assembly line
In this unit, students will be introduced to the history and concept of the assembly line. They will compare assembly line to the traditional manufacture process before industrial revolution, analysis, and find out the advantages and disadvantages. Through the activities, students will break down a task, sort and organize parts of greeting cards. They will also time themselves and find out how to improve the assemble line to complete the task precisely and efficiently.
Topic 12 Environment Detecting
In this unit, students will act like “detectives” and find out the living conditions of the environment that we are living in. They will be asked if we the only ones have these conditions in the universe. They will be shown real environmental problems and how they impact our living conditions, i.e. basic needs. In the mean time, students will brainstorm the solutions of the problems, and will be presented with sustainable and innovated solutions that engineers came up, that putting clean technology as first priority. To think outside the box as solutions, how to re-create the living conditions, if we are not on earth.
